  1. Set well-defined and realistic goals.
    • For example: if you bid $0.01 on just one or two search terms, you are unlikely to thousands of visits per month for a penny each.

  2. Set yourself limits, including:
    • The maximum amount of money you're prepared to bid on any of your term.
    • The maximum amount of money you're prepared to bid on particular types of search term
      - example $0.10 on highly specific terms, $0.05 on broader terms.
    • The maximum amount of time you're prepared to spend per week on managing your Pay Per Click accounts
Many of the search engines make it easy for you to micromanage your account. You can easily spend hours or days playing around with your bids and listings - it isn't worth micromanaging any but your highest traffic or most expensive terms.

    • Keep up to date with the latest changes at the search engines that your using by reading their e-mail newsletters and press releases. Most search engines will post online copies. too

  4. Start Immediately.
    • The sooner you start Pay Per Click advertising, the sooner you'll start getting traffic.
    • With many Pay Per Click search engines, if you and another advertiser bid the same amount on the same term, you'll be listed higher than them if you opened your account first. The early bird gets the worm! This could be especially important if you plan on bidding on a lot of terms.
