Stealth
(also known as "cloaking")

This is a highly controversial tactic, but is one that some search engine optimization companies do you use. (Our company does not use it, and recommends that others do not use this tactic either, for reasons that we shall explain).

Search engine robots can be spotted as they crawl your site - they can be identified by their IP Address and/or Agent Name.

If you don't know these values for the search engine of interest, many search engines publish this information on their web sites. Additionally, if you analyze your web site's logs (especially accesses to your robots.txt file), this will probably reveal which robots visited your site.

Once you know the robot details, you could code your site using server-side scripts such CGI, PHP, or ASP, to emit different pages to the search engine robot as opposed to the pages that are seen by normal web surfers. This way you could show (for example) an optimized doorway page to each search engine, and the normal content of your site to normal web surfers.

The reason that this technique is controversial, is that it could be used (and has been used by some people) in a way that devalues search results - the listings in the search engine's index may not match the contents of the pages. This could happen if a person spamdexed search engines by showing pages to the search engine crawler containing one set of keywords, but showing web surfers totally different content.

Additionally many search engines have policies about stealth and cloaked pages, and search engines have even been known to ban those sites that they discover are using stealth or cloaking techniques.

Our company does not using cloaking or stealth techniques. Furthermore, we recommend that you do not use cloaking or stealth techniques. As you can see, this is both because of the risks involved (stealthed/cloaked sites risk being banned from search engines), and because stealth/cloaking can devalue the quality of search engine results.
