How To Submit Your Site - Basics

Search Engine submission is the act of telling the search engines about your site so that they can index it.

If you are inexperienced with search engine submission I recommend that you read the articles on Submission Issues, but the most important points are:-
  • Submitting is not enough

    • Submitting generally does not guarantee that you will be listed.

    • Submitting generally does not guarantee that you will get much if any traffic.

  • Repeated submission may be unhelpful

    • Search engines are not usually instanteous.

    • Do not expect your traffic to rise immediately!

    • Resubmitting your site just because you have not seen results yet is rarely necessary - and can even prove counterproductive.

  • Are there really one million search engines?

Obviously it depends on how you count them and what you include... but many people who say the number was considerably lower...
The basic submission process is simple - just visit each search engine, click the Suggest A Site, Add URL or Add Site link, and enter your details.

Does this mean that automatic submission services are a waste of time?

Answer: It depends. You need to decide for yourself.

Different submission services offer different features, some of which may go considerably beyond merely submitting to your site to a few search engines. So, you need to look at each particular service that you are considering, and then make a decision based on what you consider important.

Some reasons why people choose automated submission services can include:
  • The submission service might save you time submitting to the most important search engines.
  • The submission service might allow you to submit to large numbers of smaller search engines, that would otherwise be impractical to submit to (although whether this is a major benefit is debatable - see One Million Search Engines?).
  • The submission service might help you making errors in submission forms, etc.
  • The submission service could provide extra value tools like keeping tracking of your submissions, or help with positioning, or by monitoring which pages of your site have been indexed by which engine.
  • The submission service may be bundled with other advertising tools, products or services which are valuable in themselves.
