How To Submit Your Site To Search Engines

Aside from directories (and not forgetting that some are syndicated into other search engines), and ignoring for now the Pay Per Click Search Engines for now, many search engines are powered by Robots and submission simply adds your site to the queue of sites for the robot to visit.

Some people attempt to submit very large numbers of pages. Not only is this likely to be unnecessary (if your site is correctly set up, robots will generally traverse a site by following internal links to each page), but the search engines might even penalize you for it.
(Exception: some search engines might allow you to pay to submit pages, per page, and are probably not going to be upset if you pay for more pages).

What is important though, is to plan your positioning strategy ahead of time, including make your site easy for the robot to traverse, and making your pages search engine friendly.

Robots usually have some delay before they visit your site, but the amount of delay will vary. Additionally, most robots will not traverse an entire large site in one visit but will come back again and again to capture small chunks of information.

The best way to know if a robot has visited your site is to check your site's web logs, and in particular the User Agent column, where you'll see names of each search engine's robot.

Finally even after the robot has visited, there may be an additional delay before you appear in the index.
